Kids Environmental Education Program for Ecological Responsibility and Service

Earth Keepers is a children's environmental awareness campaign that is an ongoing
outreach to the local schools. Many of the children in Belize are not even familiar with
the terms global warming, climate change or deforestation, let alone eutrophication,
ocean acidification, or biomagnification. The campaign will visit each school and will
have a broad scope as it will address all grade levels at once. The goal of the
campaign is to familiarize the children with the effects of pollution and
over-development. Our focus will be on local effects such as coral reef bleaching,
deforestation, and the various effects of pesticide pollution. We will also focus on
pollution from solid waste, as that is still a big problem in Belize.  Finally we will tie all
these local problems together and look at the way they affect climate. Our format for
this program is highly interactive, inviting student participation through music,
movement, competitive and cooperative games, crafts, and discussions.  We will visit a
different area school bi-weekly in an effort to interact with as many local children as
possible.
Another component of the KEEPERS
program is the establishment of an
international pen pal program which
will facilitate and encourage open
discussion between children in the
USA and Belize about local impacts of
development that does not consider
long term sustainable viability.
Children in Belize will discuss issues
like deforestation, loss of biodiversity,
and coral reef bleaching with their
USA pen pals who will likewise discuss
the harmful effects of atmospheric
pollution, acid rain, and Carbon
Emissions. Each will come away with a
real world perspective on the global
issue of anthropogenic impacts.
We will also organize an annual EARTH
KEEPERS festival which will invite children
to submit 'science projects' in the
category of environment. This will be an
expansion of the first annual Earthday
festival which took place at Galen
University last year. The Earth KEEPERS
festival will also provide informational
booths about various environmental and
social issues and invite NGO's, organic
farms, and eco-tourism entities in Belize to
present interactive demonstration booths
related to sustainable development. One
of the social issues we will focus heavily
on will be the impending loss of cultural
heritage. We will invite representatives
from each culture in Belize to present their
cultural heritage in an authentic and
entertaining format for the children.
We are very excited about Earth KEEPERS
and will keep the site updated with
information, pictures, and stories from the
kids. Be sure to check back!
