The STAND Center has designed  our first field
course for University level students and
independent scholars which we call 'Journey into
Sustainable Development' to begin May 19th and
run through May 31st, 2008. We are currently
working with Galen University to try to obtain
credit for students who participate in the course.
Journey into Sustainable Development will focus
on a hands on experience of sustainable
development in action.
Students will share a bunk house tucked snugly
within the farm and encircled by the noble rain
forest. A series of interactive lectures leading
into vigorous group discussions will teach
students about topics like stacked poly-culture,
biomimicry, and natural building. Hands on
workshops will teach students what the
techniques and methods of sustainable
development feel like to the people practicing
them on ground level, and solidify their
understanding of the topics.
We feel that the only way for sustainable
development to ever take a global effect is for
those currently earning degrees in the field to
have a complete understanding of the practical
realities of what this kind of development
requires.
From harvesting fresh spinach to preparing and
applying herbal anti fungal teas, students will
learn to better understand and appreciate what
sustainable agriculture is like in action. Our
week long natural building workshop will help
them understand both the advantages and
disadvantages of Natural Construction. Ad the
feildtrips will give them a relaxing and engaging
experience of Belize and how ecotourism can be
a part of sustainable development here.
